SUNRISE-6G successfully hosts its #1 Hackathon in Athens!
The #1 SUNRISE-6G Hackathon took place on November 12, 2025, in Athens, bringing together more than 40 participants from industry, academia, and research. The full-day event focused on hands-on collaboration, technical onboarding, and showcasing innovative integrations with the SUNRISE-6G Experimentation Portal.
A key highlight of the event was the strong collaboration with 2 SNS-JU projects, ENVELOPE and NATWORK, whose testbeds were successfully integrated into the platform, demonstrating the value and momentum of cross-project cooperation within the SNS community.
Participants spent the day integrating testbeds, receiving technical coaching, and prototyping new applications. They worked toward two concrete objectives, and all goals were successfully achieved.
- Onboard at least 2 new testbeds to the SUNRISE-6G Portal.
- Integrate at least 2 new applications through the platform.
- Prototype applications using CAMARA APIs (Quality on Demand, Location, and Edge Application Management) exposed through ETSI OpenOP.
Successfully Integrated Testbeds & Winners!
During the hackathon, 5 testbeds were successfully integrated into the SUNRISE-6G Experimentation Portal, demonstrating diverse capabilities across the SNS ecosystem:
- NL-COMM Testbed (University of Surrey)
Multiple tests were integrated at the SUNRISE-6G portal to demonstrate how innovative non-linear processing techniques improve Multi-User MIMO performance while drastically reducing the number of antennas and power consumption. Performance comparisons were shown with conventional MIMO techniques implemented at the University of Surrey O-RAN testbed.
- ICCS 5G-6G Testbed – SNS-JU ENVELOPE project
ICCS showcased non-3GPP access in an end-to-end 5G network, with UEs simultaneously interconnected via 5G NR and WiFi. Their test measured how fast and reliable the connection is with different scheduling algorithms.
- CERTH Testbed – SNS-JU NATWORK project
CERTH delivered 2 tests showcasing how 5G traffic can be analysed faster and more efficiently using P4 network switches that monitor traffic and classify threats dynamically using AI techniques.
- STFT – IoT testbed with Indoor Localization (MoSys Lab, University of Nicosia)
The STFT testbed lets users test coverage, connections, and how the network adapts when things change. UNIC delivered a test showing how they can track people or devices indoors with high accuracy using smart prediction models. Their system learns movement patterns to improve location results over time.
- University of Peloponese Testbed (ESDA LAB)
The UoP testbed provides an Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) environment with IoT devices and a robot deployed in a smart home environment. Their test measured the power consumption and performance of IoT devices in real-time.
4 winners were selected across 2 categories:
- Testbeds: University of Surrey and ICCS
- Applications: BIOSIM and CERTH
Winners received special gadgets, guidance on innovation, and the opportunity for ongoing collaboration through API access, technical support, and visibility at the European level.
A #2 SUNRISE-6G Hackathon is already planned for 2026!
Stay tuned for updates and new opportunities to engage!
SUNRISE-6G warmly invites all SNS-JU projects to federate their testbeds through our platform, enabling specific functional tests that benefit the wider society.
