Oulu University Initiates 6G Radio Measurements in Luleå’s Robotics Lab
In the first weeks of September 2024, the SUNRISE-6G project partner, the University of Oulu (UOULU), conducted preliminary experimental radio measurements in the Sub-Terranean laboratory of the Robotics and AI (RAI) group at Luleå University of Technology (LTU). Back in late August, the Centre for Distance-Spanning Technology (CDT) of LTU, together with the RAI group, successfully obtained a radio license from the Swedish Post and Telecom (PST) authority to use part of the available radio spectrum for research purposes related to future 6G networks (Press Release: Link). This permitted UOULU to bring the preliminary equipment into the RAI Sub-Terranean laboratory, thus allowing UOULU and LTU to begin the active phase of the SUNRISE-6G project, as initially planned during the previous meeting in April.

The initial experimental activities focused primarily on evaluating the equipment and antenna configurations to optimise the 6G testbed installation in the Sub-Terranean laboratory. The main objective of these experiments was to assess and measure radio coverage in the harsh tunnel environment, paving the way for complex robotics applications and further research under the SUNRISE-6G project.
Additional plans, steps, and meetings have also been discussed, further strengthening the collaboration between LTU and UOULU. The next goal is to finalise and deploy a preliminary 6G-enabled testbed in RAI’s Sub-Terranean laboratory, thus opening new research opportunities.
